Why Glorify Loki?

I'm always surprised when I hear someone take on the name of Loki. Or, they will give their pet that name. It makes me wonder what their understanding could be. What are they communicating by that choice?

Who is He?

Sources tell us his father was a jotunn named Farbauti. The name is generally translated as "dangerous striker". It is assumed to represent violent force in nature, possibly a lightning strike.

His mother's name is Laufey, meaning "leafy". Her name is usually associated with dry foliage such as leaves and pine needles found on the forest floor.

Together, these two represent the wild fires that can spontaneously sweep through a forest, causing great devastation. This explains why Loki is unpredictable, destructive and difficult to control.

This is much different than the idea of a misunderstood anti-hero. An anti-hero just appears like a possible bad guy on the outside, but follows a positive moral code on the inside. A wildfire has no such moral code.

Loki is not one of the Aesir or Vanir, he is a jotunn who happens to hang out with the Gods, and constantly causes Them trouble.

The Gods Got Fed Up

As though he wasn't already on their nerves, the last straw came when he tricked Hod into killing Baldur. Then, as though that wasn't bad enough, he kept Baldur from returning from the dead by being the only entity refusing to cry.

At that point, Loki knew he went too far. He went on the run, but Thor caught him and dragged him to a hidden cave to be chained up. To make it more of a punishment, the Gods turned one of Loki's sons into a wolf to kill another of Loki's sons. They used the entrails of the dead son to make the chains with which Loki was bound. They then left Loki in a position where the venom of a serpent would constantly drip on him.

The Gods do not like Loki.

The Last Battle

When the Ragnarok/Gotterdammerung starts, Loki will break free. That's not a good thing. He will join with the fire giants and engage in open warfare against the Gods and Their allies (that's supposed to be us).

He will captain a ship made of the fingernails and toenails of the dead. The crew and passengers of that ship will be the forces of chaos, such as giants, the hostile dead, and wild men who oppose the Gods.

When the ship finally arrives, Loki will battle Heimdall, the Guardian of Bifrost. Both will perish in that fight.

The Gods are not anxious for this last battle. Are you?

Whose Side Are You On?

The question remains, why are you using his name? The things we do in any of the Worlds resonate throughout the other eight. Any time you tell your dog with that name, "You're a good boy! I love you, [his name]," you add the slightest little vibration to Worlds.

You may ask, what about all the good things, like the Hammer and the Spear, and so on? Those are instances where the Gods made the best of the situation. If he wasn't constantly bringing on trouble, when would they need those items? Would the Gods have better items if he hadn't interfered.

Again, he is not an anti-hero, he is a destructive force.

Please consider not using that name. Don't venerate him as though he was a god. He's not. He is Their enemy.
